xorg and xfree
 

can someone please explain to me what xorg is
and how it is different from xfree

XOrg and XFree are both XWindow Servers. Unlike operating systems like-Windows, Unix like operating systems have a very layered GUI system.

The XServer is the base component of any GUI in Unix/Linux. It handles basic drawing operations, I/O within the GUI, hardware interaction etc. It's a server because you can connect to it remotely if it's set up properly. Unix and Linux are designed to be multiuser operating systems so an XServer is designed to support that design.

XFree and XOrg are both X-Servers however many people (myself included) tend to like XOrg these days. XOrg has better performance than XFree, tends to be more actively maintained and has advanced features (like Translucency/Transparency).
