xmms - realtime

Hello,

I have been fighting with XMMS to get it to stop skipping. It skips when I emerge things (Gentoo user here), compile, read heavily from disk (i.e. when Thunderbird is building a summary of a folder or something), etc. I have a Athlon XP 2000+ running at 1.6 Mhz with 512 MB RAM. I have seen posts where people are successfully running XMMS with no skipping on 233's, so I dont' get what I'm doing wrong. I am running OSS still because I can't seem to get ALSA to work with my sound card (but that's another post).

I saw that there is an option to run XMMS as a realtime process, but it requires that XMMS be run as root. I tried to su and then type 'xmms', and it says it can't load the display (paraphrasing). So I looked around a bit more and found things saying "just suid to root and use realtime option". Being a Linux newbie I don't really know how to do this. I tried 'sudo xmms' but same no display error occurs.

How do I run XMMS as a realtime process by executing it with root priviledges? Using KDE if it matters. I would like, in the end, to change the menu item for XMMS to run as root.

Are there any other things I should try to help with XMMS? I have already increased the cache to no avail.

Thanks,

~ Justin
