You can't play through your soundcard when you're not root, is that what you're saying?

Add your own username to the audio group. As root, edit /etc/group. Look for the line that begins with "audio:". It probably looks something like this:
audio:x:29:
Just append your username to the end of that line:
audio:x:29:jason (or whatever your login is)
Save and exit. Log out and log in again and try playing back some music.

If it still doesn't work, try doing chmod g+rw /dev/dsp /dev/dsp0 /dev/mixer as root, then try again.

the program won't load up for me unless i run the command from root. I can play cds and stuff so i must have permission on the soundcard.

i'm just trying to make a launcher for it,]

Do you get any error messages or something when you type the command in a shell?

You've tried adding read permissions for yourself?
