XMMS not playing even if plugin is installed

hi guys!

im having this problem regarding xmms. it does not play mp3 files. so what i did was to download the library for the mp3 and installed it. after that i double-clicked on an mp3 file and it went in the playlist and there was no sound. no movement even int he progress bar above. even the time (track time) does not move. so i pressed play and xmms froze. i could not close it and also my taskbar froze. i could not logout or restart or shutdown. all i could do is kill xmms. but after killing xmms, i went back and found out that i still could not access the main menu button and the buttons around it. my taskbar was gone! it was useless! i could not press it. so i did a shutdown on a terminal using the ctrl+alt+f1 combination.

i would appriciate any help. thanks for your time

im running redhat 9
the sound works perfect. the only problem is the xmms program
i tried playing the mp3 file in mplayer, and it played. but it does not have enough functionality thats why i want xmms to work.

thanks again in advance!

Please describe exactly what you installed and how, any error messages (if something is launched from an x terminal, you can see and read error messages.

I installed via apt4rpm and it works perfectly here w FC1.

here it is fancypiper, i hope this fills it up

hi! this is what i did:

upon installation of linux redhat 9, i included the package for xmms which comes from their cd. then when i finished installation. i decided to play my mp3 files on my cd. i double-clicked on it and the xmms program told me that redhat does not support mp3 files so what i did was to go look for the mp3 plugin. i found one, i forgot the name but it looks like this: "xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-21.i386.rpm" after downloading it, i installed it. using the "rpm -i" command. the installation went fine and there was no error messages. after that i double-clicked on the mp3 file and it went to the playlist but there was no sound and no movement. but when i play cds i hear the sound and even the sound events i hear it. and one more thing, what is a binary package and a source package? is it different from rpm packages? thanks again. hope to hear from you guys! good day!

mpg123 is another mpeg layer player. I'm not sure if it includes the libs for mp3's or not.
I think you need the actual mp3 libs. http://www.gurulabs.com/files/xmms-m...8-3.p.i386.rpm should be it.

That's the proper package, I think, but I suggest adding the -v flag (verbose) to the rpm command.

Check out apt4rpm for software management, I have been using it for software management since Red Hat 7.2 came out. Their sources have 99% of the software I have installed for my FC1. I only had to compile fluxbox stuff.

Have you enabled it in xmms?

Right click->options->preferences Audio in/out plugins tab ->check enable plugin

Re: XMMS not playing even if plugin is installed

there is no sound in your redhat xmms when you player MP3? sure, you must install a plugin .
this plugin named 'xmms-mp3-1.2.7-13.p.i386.rpm' It's easy to get it.
if this soft is down on your disk : rpm -vih xmms-mp3-1.2.7-13.p.i386.rpm
if a error said as : you must install xmms-mp3-1.2.7-13.p.o' before . It mean here is no xmms in!

You have to check a checkbox in the config to enable the plugins you installed. Did you enable the plugin?

Try opening an x terminal and give these commands.

mpg321 /path/to/song.mp3

or

mpg123 /path/to/song.mp3

Can you play from the command line? If neither work, post the error messages that result.

where do i download APT-SERVER for apt4rpm? what is its file name?

i was trying to install apt4rpm, but the installation was looking for other files. i downloaded these files:

apt-0.5.4cnc8-1cl.i386.rpm
apt-0.5.4cnc9-1cl.i386.rpm
apt4rpm-0.68.2-2.noarch.rpm
apt4rpm-0.68.2-2.src.rpm
librpm404-4.0.4-8x.27.i386.rpm
perl-XML-LibXML-1.53-1.i586.rpm
perl-XML-LibXML-Common-0.12-1.i586.rpm
perl-XML-SAX-0.12-1.i586.rpm
perl-XML-NamespaceSupport-1.08-1.i586.rpm
rpm-4.2-0.69.i386.rpm

the only file i cant find is the apt-server. the installation error says that the apt-server is needed by apt4rpm. i dont know what filename it has i went to their homepage but cant find it. maybe because i dont know the filename. thanks guys!

Describe exactly what you did.

What you should have done:
Is apt-get already installed?
Code:
Sun Jun 13 10:19 AM fancy@uilleann ~ $ whereis apt-get
apt-get: /usr/bin/apt-get /usr/share/man/man8/apt-get.8.gz
Sun Jun 13 10:19 AM fancy@uilleann ~ $
If it isn't installed, go to apt4rpm, read the instructions on what to download for your flavor of Red Hat/Fedora, then download and install that.

Open an x terminal and become root
Code:
Sun Jun 13 10:19 AM fancy@uilleann ~ $ su -
Password:
Sun Jun 13 10:22 AM root@uilleann ~ #
Now that you are root and can use the program use it to find the latest packages and updates:
Code:
Sun Jun 13 10:22 AM root@uilleann ~ # apt-get update
Get:1 http://ayo.freshrpms.net fedora/linux/1/i386 release [1812B]

Not that apt-get knows what's available and you just gotta click rather than type someting:
Code:
Sun Jun 13 10:28 AM root@uilleann ~ # apt-get install synaptic

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  synaptic

Synaptic should appear somewhere on your menu and you can use that for installing/uninstalling easily. A prompt for roots password pops up when you attempt to use it.

May as well get up to date as well
Code:
Sun Jun 13 10:28 AM root@uilleann ~ # apt-get dist-upgrade

The following packages will be upgraded
  cvs gaim rsync samba samba-client samba-common vim-common vim-enhanced

After unpacking 14.4MB disk space will be freed.
