I have transfered all my mp3 music from my old system onto my Linux (Fedora Core 5) Harddrive. I have recently found out Helix player does not play mp3's and I have tried RealPlayer (Very laggy). I found the XMMS was like my old media player (Winamp) and I tried it out, I looked at all the options for it and saw that it was very very similar. One problem I have with it is that I cannot get it to play my mp3's. When I hit Play File it takes me to a screen and asks me to pick a file. After choosing a file I would then hit Play. It would not do anything after that. I would hit play and it would bring me back to the browse for a file window. Help please.

Red Hat (aka Fedora) does not support mp3 for legal reasons, so xmms does not have the support built-in. Solutions can be found in many places like;

I have went to both those places originally and have found nothing. I am also familiar with why Red Hat (Fedora Core 5) cannot support mp3's. I have found no way to get a mp3 plugin for Fedora Core 5 and need some help, maybe a link to get this. If it is built into Fedora Core 5 please tell me a Terminal command I can use to execute it. Thank you!

Here's how to install the correct MP3 plugin:

1. Make sure that you're using my yum configuration from the installing software question.
2. Open a Terminal.
3. Become root: su -

4. Now, install the correct plugin depending on which MP3 player you want to use:
* For Rhythmbox or Totem:

yum install gstreamer-plugins-ugly
* For XMMS:

yum install xmms-mp3

* The popular XMMS media player (also called "Audio Player" in the Gnome menu) is available for FC5 in Fedora Extras. The freshrpms repository has an MP3 plugin for XMMS. * Type:

su -

Hit enter. Type your root password. Hit enter.

* Type:

yum -y install xmms xmms-mp3

Hit enter. Wait for the installation to complete. Close the terminal. XMMS will be available in "Applications" > "Sound & Video" as "Audio Player". (Note: You may have to click the upper left hand corner of XMMS, select "Options" > "Preferences" and select an alternate sound output plugin in order to get XMMS to work on your system.)
