XMMS & Red Hat 9 & MP3 plugin = no :(

I formatted Red Hat and re-installed it today, only to have my XMMS (the reason I un-installed) act up again. What it's doing is it appears to be "fast forwarding" through any MP3 that I play, while producing no sound. It just goes at about 20 seconds/second without producing a sound, but making the visualization meter go off. I've tried un-installing XMMS and re-installing, but nothing is working. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it will play CD tracks normally.

Thanks, but I aleady figurred it out. I was starting my sound wrong and therefore it wasn't using the proper driver. Thanks for the help anyway!

may help

Hmm...I seem to be having the same problem as Slayer. RH 9 new install w/ xmms, no extraneous plugins or anything. I'm trying to play an ogg file, although the same thing happens w/ mp3 -- it plays a five-minute file in about 12 seconds (that's right, I don't get the mp3 placeholder issue (yet, I'm assuming)). My output plugin is _not_ diskwriter, it's the eSound Output Plugin. I tried switching it to OSS and it's the exact opposite result - the CPU maxes out for about 30 seconds, but the playback sits at 0:00.

Likewise, CD's play fine. I'm not sure how Slayer found out about starting sound wrong, or what he did to fix it -- I'd like to see some more details on that.

blackrose 07-10-2003 08:58 AM

Okay, this is odd. I've "fixed" the problem, and it seems to be related to the fact that I'm running enlightenment within gnome. I have enlightenment's sound turned off, because I don't like hearing every little click and swoosh while I'm trying to get work done (and I haven't found a way to set prefs for that, other than on/off).

So on a whim I turned it on (clicks, swooshes, and all), and xmms played my ogg file just fine. I turned it off again, and...xmms still plays the ogg file just fine. So I guess something somewhere got confused about which sound is supposed to be turned on when. Now I'm just wondering if it'll get confused again when I reboot :P.

(...or maybe it was right before and it's confused now, but it's confusion is what I want? I dunno, I'm confused...)

macewan 07-10-2003 10:33 AM

is esd on then?

blackrose 07-10-2003 10:56 AM

Indeed; ps-ef | grep esd shows:

[process stuff] esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 2 -spawnfd 27

-- tangent --
Mind you, I'd be more than happy to run enlightenment on its own rather than w/in gnome, but I can't quite seem to give up gnome's menu (even though I do most work and launch most apps from within xterm anyway).

I seem to be having somewhat the same problem as you all, yet when I try to add something (MP3s) to my XMMS playlist it doesn't show up. As far as playing CDs Linux just loaded the CD player for that. I'v played with my plugins and stuff and I'm still unable to get it to work. I'm using RH9 fresh install. I'm really new with Unix based OSs. And off the sound topic for a second.. When I try to change my resolution setting fro 800X600 to 1024X768, i get that you must restart for the Xwindows to change this setting. Yet if I do restart it doesn't change. Any help would be greatful.

Opened XMMS---->options-->prefrences-->hit enter

output plugin ....hit dropdown ...change to opensound or try something else.

Just had the same problem and fixed it. Dont ask .....yes I worked at a helpdesk.

Umbrella,

I was having the same problem with my laptop. Just wondering if you checked you monitor size type? That was my problem as i had it set at 800X600 so when I changed the screen res. it wouldn't let it go to 1024X768. Just a thought.
