Ok, here is the deal, i run a slackware system and windows manager is the GUI is use, none of the plugings i have are able to play mp3s. i have the following plugins, ALSA 1.2.8 output plugin: aRts Driver 0.4: Disk Writer Plugin 1.2.8: eSound Output Plugin 1.2.8: OSS Driver 1.2.8.
Xmms works in KDE and GNOME, but not in any other GUI.

well, you may have to start up one of the sound servers when logging into your other environments. example is when i want to go into window maker, i put in the autostart file: artsd &

and use the arts driver for xmms and xine so that the kde programs that use arts as the sound output work in windows maker. but i'm surprised that using the oss xmms plugin doesn't work. that should work in other environments.

Mp3 is an audio compression format. it lets music be saved as small compressed files. And although xmms has the built in ability to play mp3's some distro's remove this function due to potential copy-right violations.

the pluggins you have installed are all output pluggins.

try installing the Mp3 pluggin.

AFAIK, redhat is the only distro that's stripped mp3 support and that started with rh8.0. and it sounds like he has mp3 support:

xmms works fine for me in KDE GNOME twm and icewm.
