XML functions not working with PHP

Hey,

I recently decided to include an RSS XML news feed onto my homepage. The server i am using is running Mandrake Linux 8.2.

I have a lot of experience with PHP but this has just baffled me, let me start by showing you the error.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: xml_parser_create()

So far, this is what I have tried to get XML functions working:

- Downloaded and installed the following RPMs:
* expat-1.95.6-1.i386.rpm
I had to uninstall a load of RPM packages in order to get expat to install.
* libxml-1.8.17-3mdk.src.rpm
I was also told to install this aswell as expat since it may solve my problem.

I have also tried upgrading Apache and PHP, but when i queried the programs for the current running versions they hadn't changed - which I found strage.

Maybe i'm installing everything totaly wrong?

I can't seem to figure out why nothing wants to be upgraded.
