XMAME on Gentoo

When I emerged Xmame and GXmame on my system, it defaulted to XGL. This wouldn't bother me except XGL won't work and I'm used to SDL, how can I get it to go to SDL?

While it was compiling, I saw it compile and link: SDL, X11, and XGL. So, like....where are they?
