XLS CLI Manipulation

Hello all.. I've done tons of searching, and from what I can see, I must be the only one in the world who wants to do this.

I have a spreadsheet that I need to send out on a regular basis. And 99.2% of the time, it's the same exact information, with only change being a date in a cell.

I've love to have a script that would modify this data and send it off, but I have had absolutely NO LUCK in finding a way to do this. I can't modify the spreadsheet.. it has to look/function the same. I've converted it to csv, modified, and brought it back to an xls file, but it looses all the pretty colors and formatting that everyone wants to see.

I tried a hex editor, but I can't really automate that. Ideally I'd love to just have some sort of sed for xls. Or something where I can say, modify cell F6 to X.

Does anyone know of anything that will do this, or point me in the right direction of where to get something like this done? I'm using gentoo linux.. but I'm almost ready to install another os in a VM just to make this happen. It's become one of those personal challenges that will be with me until I beat it, or die. heh.

Any information would really be appreciated!

You might look into pyexcelerator (a python module)

http://sourceforge.net/projects/pyexcelerator/
