Xine + Win32 codec = choppy video
 

Hello All,

I'm trying to watch some movies that I have in ASF, MPG and AVI format. The avi movies run fine but ASF and MPG run horribly choppy. After about 2 minutes I get an error saying that the system is slow and that to many frames have been dropped.

Also once I open Xine my CPU usage jumps to 100% and stays there until I close the program.

I've downloaded and installed the latest xine-lib package as well as the latest xine-ui package, still no change.

I want to reinstall the win32 codec sets but the only package I can find is a RedHat RPM. I'm running Slack 10. If I was to use rpm2targz and copy the resulting file to an appropriate directory will Xine recognize the codec, if so what directory should it got to.

Furthermore, some of these videos are running from a VFAT partition so I naturally assume that they will require more CPU load to play, but teh problem remains regardless of what source media I use.

Is there any other package I need to download? (When I was using RedHat 9 I had to install speex, libfame, xvidcore and various other RPMs to get the video working.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I have not provided enough info, tell me what I need to post and hit me on the headwith a frying pan for being an annoying noob.

you can download win32 codecs from mplayer's site http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/rel...041107.tar.bz2
and use them with xine.
My humble opinion is that mplayer works better and is faster.

I keep hearing good things about MPlayer, I'm going to bite the bullet and finally switch. I've always had good luck with Xine. Up until my latest installation that is.

Well remove my checkmark from Xine and add one to the MPlayer column.

How can you get the video to repeat in MPlayer? Also, how do you bring up the controls for MPlayer with a video running?

Now that mention it ,it may not have replay:scratch:

To have the controls, if you have compiled it from source, you need
to use ./configure --enable-gui before the make command.
then you can use the gui, with gmplayer. (u have to have at least one skin downloaded)
if u use rpm's just try gmplayer, they probably have the binaries with gui enabled.
I haven't used the rpm's but they say it's better to compile it by yourself (as for every program)

you can use the redhat rpm on Slack. If you use rpm2tgz to convert the rpm to a Slackware package, just install it as you would normally install a Slack package. I have noticed that the codecs from the MPlayer website sometimes don't work fine with Xine. If you experience this problem just download the win32 codecs from xines' nightly build page.
