Xine problems

I just updated my computer to Redhat 9.0. Unfortunately since Xine is not included with the new distribution the old installation started acting flaky after I upgraded, crashing, controls freezing, etc. I tried installing the new Xine libraries via rpm, this appeared to go smoothly. When I click on the Xine icon the new program comes up but immediately crahses. When I type in Xine on the command line the old version of Xine pops up. This is odd since both methods seem to execute the command "xine". This is the old version I used and it runs for a short period of time then crashes. If anybody else has this problem please let me know how to fix it! Thanks

get an app called apt
install it and then run (as root)

apt-get update

wen it's finished,

apt-get install synaptic

synaptic is a gui type frontend to apt

xine is in the multimedia section as are vlc, mplayer, ogle and so on

apt/synaptic will take care of versions and dependencies

OK, I tried to install APT from a tarball, but when I try to do a "make" i get [cdrom] Error 1 and the file does not compile. What gives?

Maybe I already had apt installed somehow because when I type apt-get it comes up with an error that it can't find librpm-4.1.so. arghhh.

well
I'd recommend installing it from an rpm

http://rpm.pbone.net is your friend
you can type in things like librpm-4.1.so
and it will search and return results
I use this site loads and it rarely lets me down
(you can also Google for files like that too)

http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/9/apt/
