Unhappy Ximian Evolution SMTP not working

I'm a linux n00b and I've made it through installing Suse 9.1 recently. I'm trying to get Evolution working but I can't figure out how to make it send out my e-mail messages. It always stalls. I've tried switching the port number from: mail.servername.org:25 to mail.servername.org:24 but that didn't work. Is it possible the mail server I'm connecting to is running on a different port? I've also heard that certain ISPs block port 25, is this a possibility? If so is there anyway to get around it. I love everything about the program so far, if only I could get this last part to work. THanks in advance...

FOrgot to mention that the error I get says something like:

Do you have a firewall installed? - it may be blocking that port. And is that the correct address? - some ask for smtp.servername.org, others use mail.servername.org and there are other variations.

I tried the smtp.servername.org with no luck. When I use Outlook I just specify mail.servername.org for both the incoming and outgoing servers and it seems to work. I'm having the same problem with both Evolution and KMail though, which I find odd. I know I installed a firewall, but I'm not quite sure how to tell if its running or not. Is there someplace I can look to see what processes I have going at any time? Thanks again.

I found the system monitor which lists all the processes that are running. So far it doesn't look like I have a firewall running though. Is there any process name in particular I should look for?

Another thing to consider: under Sending Mail, what is the setting for "Server Requires Authentication"? To send mail, it should be left unchecked (of course, in order to receive mail, it would need to be checked). I ran into the same issue in the past, and it was due to that condition. -- J.W.

I'm running Suse 9.1, and I have the "Server Requires Authentification" option unchecked. I'm beginning to suspect that my ISP has the port blocked, as eveerything else seems to be ruled out. Thanks.
