Ximian Evolution Slackware 9 Installation

hi.

im trying to install ximian evolution 1.4 (latest) to try it out. slackware 9.

i do:
$ xhost +localhost
$ su
Password: cat
# echo $DISPLAY
:0.0
# wget -q -O - http://go.ximian.com | sh
==> Autodetecting system type...
==> Checking $DISPLAY and X permissions...

The Ximian Desktop Installer is a graphical application, and
either you have no DISPLAY variable set or the root user does not
have permission to access your X server. Run 'xhost +localhost'
before becoming root, and make sure that the DISPLAY variable is
set correctly before running the go-ximian script.

Cleaning up temporary files... done.

i did what they said. and it still doesnt work. also tried :
# export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0

ideas?

Dude - do you have Dropline? If not, you might want to check it out: http://www.dropline.net/gnome/download.php

Dropline is a large collection (>170 packages) of many common and useful things, and the latest version includes everything you need for Evolution. Installing Dropline is (I think) a great idea, especially since it installs all those packages for you automatically, although it will set you window manager to Gnome. (If you use something else like KDE, you can set it back by running: /usr/X11R6/bin/xwmconfig

I likewise kept running into brick walls trying to install Evolution by hand, but Dropline solved the problem for me, and since then I've become a big fan of it. -- J.W.

It depends on which distro you are talking about. As for Slack, the answer is No, definitely not for v9.0, and apparently not in v9.1 either. I've checked the changelog and package list for v9.1, and didn't see anything about either Ximian or Evolution. (Please correct me if I'm wrong or I just missed something.)

In any case, you can easily get Evolution set up on your Slack system by either going to Linuxpackages and downloading/installing manually, or to install Dropline and install it automatically. -- J.W.

OK, installed dropline gnome. Evolution won't send mail and is very unstable. Had to force the installation onto 9.1. Wait for dropline for 9.1? Everything else runs great!

The error on send is as follows in dialog box:

Error while performing operation:
MAIL FROM response error: Command unrecognized: ""

Ideas? Wait?

roastpork - if the dropline install went smoothly, then evolution should be OK too (not that I'm the expert or anything). Are you sure that the issues you describe aren't due just to Evolution configuration problems (or omissions)? If you can't send mail, then I'll guess that it's because you have specified in the Tools > Settings > Sending Mail panel that your SMTP server requires authentication. It probably doesn't - I don't have that box checked on my PC and things work perfectly.

Dropline regularly comes out with updates so my guess would be that worst case, it's only a matter of a time till the Evolution packages are upgraded to conform with whatever other changes are present in Slack v9.1 -- J.W.

Actually I'm getting the same damned error.

The "server requires a password" box isn't checked and everything's configured the way it should be.

Seems to me to be just another fine Ximian Evolution install. I have never gone very long without an issue with this stupid mail program whether on Redhat, Mandrake, or Slackware. Even when I CAN get it to send mail half the time it locks up and needs to be forcibly shut down. Idiots can't even add the functionality to move through messages from the message window.

Sounds like a short in-between the keyboard/deskchair to me

Seriously though, Evolution has never done me wrong on Mandrake 8.2, 9, 9.1 and now in Slackware 9 with Dropline (thanks to J.W's suggestion).

Scruff - thanks, glad that the suggestion worked out favorably.

dmadcat - sounds like you're pretty frustrated with Evolution and may have given up on it, but if not (seriously, it's a great program) maybe the cause of the trouble is minor. Not to ask unnecessary questions, but sometimes those are the most easily overlooked, so from the Obvious Dept: are your POP3 (incoming) and SMTP (outgoing) server names correct? My ISP uses "postoffice.xxx.xxx" for In, but "mail.xxx.xxx" for Out. Is your login ID correct? With my old ISP, I just needed to supply my username, with the current one I have to supply my username@my_isp.com. What do you have for the SSL question? For me, it's Never, because when I had it on Always nothing worked.

I don't know if any of this will help, but I figure I should toss in my 2 cents. -- J.W.

A tip for you guys that are getting the Mail from "" error in Evolution in Dropline Gnome: Edit your hosts file, and take out all empty lines and comments. Works a charm for me. Found this fix over at the Dropline forums....

He's having to force it because Dropline was written for Slackware 9, not 9.1. It will prob run, but things are bound to be a bit buggy. They are working on a package for 9.1 though.

I updated some of my Slack 9 install and already noticed some problems with Evolution.

I did a fresh dropline-install this morning and get this "Error while performing operation:
MAIL FROM response error: Syntax error, command unrecognized" message too when trying to send a mail. is there a solution or a workaround yet?
