xhost +

Hello -

I installed RH 4 and I can't get an X Window session to start.

When I type the following:

$> xhost +

I get the following error:

xhost: unable to open display ""

When I installed the OS, it was hanging on the monitor probing. I therefore installed with the following switch:

linux apm=off skipddc nousb

Could this have something to do with the X Window session not working?

Thanks in advance for any help!

To start X you must run
If X-Windows does not start take a look at /var/log/Xorg.log or /var/log/XFree.log to find out the reason.
"xhost +" is used when you want to allow connections to your X-server from other boxes, so the X-server must be running to be able to use this command.

I think your main problem is you don't have an X Server running for the XWindow session to connect to.

What run level are you currently running at? A typical server runs at level 3, no X support.
