Xgl, Compiz and Beryl

I am running SuSE 10.1 with the latest updates and was playing around with Xgl and Compiz.

I used "gnome-xgl-settings" under KDE for configuration. First it said that my GeForce FX 5200 by Nvidia is not in the database, although it is not brandnew and nothing special...

"gnome-xgl-settings" asks me how many sides the cube should have and since I used 6 workspaces before I entered 6. Still the cube only had 4 sides... Does anybody know how to fix this?

Those 4 sides had all the same background design of workspace 1. No
individual setting was possible. Can it be fixed?

Furthermore: I am using Kaffeine for watching DVB-T. The advantage is that I can zoom into the picture (Ctrl+ "+" on numpad) and adapt it to my 16:9 widescreen. This does not work here: the picture is basically destroyed. Again: does anybody know how to fix that?

Thanks for any help!

Oliver

If I were you, if you have an nvidia card, I would uninstall both xgl and compiz, install beryl only, install the latest nvidia driver. I believe suse 10.1 has xorg 7.1 so you won.t need xgl and can run beryl (a fork of compiz), natively. Beryl is much better than compiz. You will need to add some lines to your xorg.conf to run it natively, so it looks as shown. Note the "Device" and "Extensions" sections, add this line to the "device" section, (Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"), and the entire "Extensions" section to the bottom of the file. Also be sure to backup your origional xorg.conf file.

The cube has 4 sids or less dito, and only one wallpaper, but beryl is being updated with new releases all the time so who knows. Oh and don't forget to install the emerald theme manager, and have both beryl, and the beryl manager start with gnome, this also works fine for kde as well. Be sure to check out the beryl forums, especialy the "installing beryl sections for suse.

Thanks a lot! But SuSE 10.1 still has xorg 6.9. Any upgrade I tried caused trouble. Would 6.9 change anything in the above procedure?

Sorry, it won't work. That's to bad, I was sure 10.1 had xorg 7.1 sorry. Have you tried upgrading suse to 10.2. I can understand though if you have 10.1 just has you like it why you might not want to. Beryl is so much better though that it is worth it, you might try it with xgl instead of compiz on your present system.

10.2

Yes I had a clean 10.2 installation on another disk. There was a big graphics problem with the nvidia card. Despite everything was set to 1440x900 it stayed at 800x600 or in other cases 1024x768. xorg.conf and other settings said the correct parameters. A proper resolution was only possible with the native xorg driver, the proprietary nvidia driver did not work and hence no 3D. That experience was mentioned by many in many fori.

But I read on the Beryl-page that there won't be an further versions for 10.1 due to driver specifications.

I am just waiting for a new nvidia driver (the current one is still from December 21st) and will give 10.2 then another try.

Thats to bad and sorry to hear it. The latest driver from nvidia via yast works fine with my 5500 and 1440x900 is realized.
Another option if you want to experience beryl natively is to try pclinux trc2, especially if you have a spare partition on which to install it, with the mentioned xorg.conf changes. I prefeer to compile the nvidia driver my self with pclinux but it is available in their repos via synaptic (the pclinux package manager). Place the bootloader to the root partition of pclinux and configure grub in yast to add a chainloader and boot it with suse's grub. It is a great hassle free os and every bit as good as suse especially where hard ware is concerned. Any way hope you have better luck with a newer nvidia driver.

I have SuSE 10.2 and a GF FX5500 as well. Moreover an FSC W19-1 (19") Widescreen TFT. I installed the nvidia drivers via YaST (repo used). But I can't make it to realize 1440x900 as before nVidia and 3D acc.

Can you pleeease help me?! - I'm getting really upset. Here's my /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
