Question xft.pc and/or fontconfig.pc

I'm trying to install Gaim. It depends on Gtk+, which contains atk, pango and glib...I've been able to successfully install atk and glib, but pango gets hung up when it can't locate either xft.pc or fontconfig.pc. I've checked the mandrake package removed (a fairly sure way to tell what I've got installed) and it says that I've got FreeType1-1.3.1-17 installed already. I did a locate fontconfig.pc and locate xft.pc, but neither show up anywhere.
I've also got pango-1.0.4-1mdk installed already, and thinking I could just use that I tried installing gtk+ itself. [I]It{/i] got hung up on not being able to find pango.pc. What are these mysterious .pc files, and why can't I find any of them?

ah, nevermind...I installed gaim from the mandrake CDs and I won't worry about the newer version...I am still curious, if anyone knows the answer?
