xfree86 not working
hi, I installed Xfree86 4.5.0 and installation went
well but when startx was run it loaded three consoles
and a clock...
I thoutght that that was a screen problem and changed
the configuration of the video card - no
improvement...
then I installed xfree86 4.3.0 - that was the
original , but nothing different happened. I run XFree86 -autoconfig too - no result.
I cannot send you the log and config files cause I
can't transfer them to MS Windows...
here are the error messages from the logs:
(WW) NV (0) Failed to set up write-combining range
(0x8000000,4x000000)
waiting for X server to shut down: fatal I0 error 32
(Broken Pipe) or KillClient on X server "0:0"

Do you have a desktop environment installed ? If it's the case, you have to configure some files, xinitrc to launch with xinit, I don't know about startx.
In the terminal you get when you launch X, type gnome-session if you have gnome, startkde for kde. "xinit startkde" from a tty would also launch kde.

as root I run STARTX and then in console GNOME-SESSION
and it says "window manager warning: Screen 0 on display :0.0" already has a window manager"
as user I do the same tning and it displays " window manager warning: Broken client , window 0x40000e (root) changed client leader window or SM client ID" and it loads the GNOME environment - only that the windows are strange - with green tabs above them, and they are all over the place.

In console, try "xinit gnome-session". That will launch gnome, along with its window manager, as the client. Your problem comes from your launching gnome with the wrong WM (the default for X, already loaded, instead of gnome's).

I would say it comes from gnome rather than X (it can't be responsible for the windows). So keep your X11 directory as it is. Can you post the output of the command ?

Just to make sure I had understood your previous message :

Is that the result of "xinit gnome-session" in tty or of typing gnome-session in a xterm ?
The output you just posted seems to come from xterm, the interesting one is the one of xinit "gnome-session".
If that's what you did and gnome did not launch, maybe you have to type the full path to gnome-session. Get it with "which gnome-session".

You shouldn't run xinit from the xterm. Run it from the shell without X activated. xinit is a command to launch X, so it can't work if you load it from inside X or if X is already using your display.
