hi,

I've installed xfree86 on my box and created the default config file using xf86config. when I try to start X from command line, an ugly grey screen comes up with cross pointer which I can move with my mouse. could someone please tell me how to start firefox browser by default when I start X?

Please tell us, what distribution you are using and what you did to install xfree86. I've not been aware of any distributions using xfree86 for many years.
