XFree86 Alternatives?

In relation to my previous post about roaming between X sessions (which no one has commented on), I would like to ask a followup:

Are there any (free) alternatives to X11 out there? I've looked at DirectFB a little, and it looks promising, but I haven't tried it.

I know X is the standard, and everyone just accepts it... but sometimes I feel that it's one of the weakest parts of linux.
It has gotten a lot better since 4.x, but I'd still be interested in atleast knowing about the alternatives.

thanks

I have a box (450 celeron 64 mb mem, Riva 8 mb video card and a couple of cheap hard drives) that I am currently building Gentoo on using these instructions. I am eager to try it out. I do tons of stuff in command line anyhow, so this looks good.
