Xfree 4.4.0 issues
when i upgrade from Xfree 4.3.0 to 4.4.0 my fonts get kind of messed up, but DPMS powersaving works in fluxbox, which i kind of like having to preserve my LCD backlight. when i switch back to X 4.3.0, the fonts go back to normal-looking, but DPMS doesn't work. i can't figure out where either problem is. i'm using the same XF86Config for both, with the same font paths and with Option "DPMS" in the same exact place.
btw, i'm installing the Xfree versions from slackware packages with swaret. i do fc-cache -vf after installing just to make sure. i've also tried saving the /etc/fonts directory from a 4.3 install and copying it over to a 4.4 install, but that didn't work. not sure where to look next, can anyone help? |
fixed!

For an LQ Addict, you should really know that posting how you fixed it would probably help someone else along the way.

I was'nt having a pop at you.... I was merely pointing out that your post was a complete waste of time. Had i searched for this thread to fix a problem, you'd have wasted my time too.
|
Yeah you really should post how you fixed it, and add value to the site's search engine.

thanx kovacs, my point exactly.
|
**** censured **** LOL synaptical would understand! :p
:tisk: |
1. my point in posting "fixed" is that not one person even chimed in to offer even one suggestion to my relatively easy problem. suddenly now that i have fixed it everyone is interested?
2. posting "fixed" is not a waste of time, because it could have saved someone from posting a reply if they came across the thread at some point in the future. i guess it didn't work. :p 3. i have 1200+ posts helping others, and i really don't need any lectures in netiquette. further, your post xonner is a direct personal attack, which is against the rules and offensive, and you ought to edit it accordingly. :tisk: |
But it is sure that i wont edit my post, contrarily of what you might think, a forum is for everybody post their opinions, and regarding to this matter, that is my opinion, i wont change it in a single point.
When you answer Evilone to a direct question of help something like "i guess i should change my monikor to "guru" then.", for me is a sign of ignorance! If you don't like it, that's not my problem. If someone hasn't posted any suggestion, is perhaps because no one had any suggestion. And by the way, i don't care if you have 1200+ posts or 129873128746382746+, if you are really a helper as you say, you should then help in what u can! At least that's what i always do. Sorry, but that's what i think! |
are you for real? my reply to EvilOne was a witticism: anyone who is an LQ Addict would post how they fixed it, so i said then i guess i should change to LQ Guru, i.e., because i did not post how i fixed it.
i've asked you politely to edit your personal attack and you have refused, so now there is nothing left but to ask the mods their opinion. sorry. Quote:

@Synaptical
1. my point in posting "fixed" is that not one person even chimed in to offer even one suggestion to my relatively easy problem. suddenly now that i have fixed it everyone is interested? So? This happens. IMHO ppl who post a solution to their own question, especially if it wasn't answered yet, have something special. They're the ones who recognise LQ isn't only build to only their advantage but to the advantage of Linux users to come. (You know who you are, and I salute you). * BTW, if you posted a fix three posts ago this fire wouldn't have been started, right?.. 2. posting "fixed" is not a waste of time True, but topping it off by posting a fix is *way better*. 3. i have 1200+ posts helping others, and i really don't need any lectures in netiquette. Trust me, you do :-] (Naw, really, even I need lessons in netiquette sometimes...) You're not above it and so isn't the rest. Post count isn't something one should worship anyway (IMNSHO). further, your post xonner is a direct personal attack, which is against the rules and offensive, and you ought to edit it accordingly. If you have problems with a member, just try the right incantations to summon a mod... @xonner The questions is, should someone like this be allowed in this kind of forum? Well, i don't think so. This is a public forum but the site owner sets the rules. And I don't recall you being granted the right to decide what goes and what not. I know for now one thing for sure, that synaptical dude is really a guru, of ignorance! - You may question someone's knowledge but do that in a respectful manner, like you would have wanted to be treated yourself. - These remarks are uncalled for and do not further constructive dialogue. As moderator I am asking you to cease and desist and edit your statements to reflect obedience to the LQ rules and respect for your fellow LQ members or apologise. At 8 posts (of which none where answers) the choice still is yours. Choose wisely. |
thanks for all the words of wisdom unSpawn.
for the record, my "fix" was just to install XFree86 from source instead of from slackware packages/swaret. but that might only have been a fix for my situation, everyone's problem is slightly different. if i had come across a post of someone having similar problems, i certainly would have chimed in to offer my fix as a suggestion. and i fully intended to post what i did here. i guess i was just feeling a little neglected. contrary to some of the comments here, i feel i really do contribute a lot to this community. i am no guru by any stretch of the imagination, but i try to be as helpful as possible with the limited knowledge i do have. i do not expect answers to every one of my questions, but i guess the fact that no one even offered a *suggestion* of what to try disappointed me a little. ### |
Since i'm not going to edit that post, once cos i don't see it as a direct offense or personal attack and i don't even know that synaptical from nowhere, and the reasons why i wrote it i've already explained...what's going happen to me now? Get banned? Is that the consequence?
I think i'll live with it... The bottomline is, no one except synaptical still knows how to fix the Xfree 4.4.0 issues. LOL By the way i would be very glad if someone called me ignorant for doing what that guy just did, it's a way to call me to reason :) "This is a public forum but the site owner sets the rules. And I don't recall you being granted the right to decide what goes and what not. " LOL, of course, i know that, that's not what i'm doing, i'm really just asking :) Thanks for the not-answer! |
did you review the thread before you posted? 3 minutes earlier, he posted a fix, and provided reasons for not doing so earlier. i can agree with the fact that he should have posted it earlier, but you dont judge a persons intelligence, or anything for that matter, on a single wrongdoing. btw, maybe you wouldnt mind being called ignorant, but he does. not everybody is like you or me (the world wouldnt be so great if everyone were me ;)).
