Angry xfce problem

I've been running SuSe 7.3 for just over a year or so with the usual minor newbie problems.
I recently installed xfce 3.8.18 and like it BUT, the mice have taken control of my system and won't let go.

I use to be able to log in to KDE, Gnome, Windowmaker etc as a user but now whichever wm/dt I chose- I get xfce.

I can still get into Kde as root.

I'd like to keep my mice but might have to kill them if they don't let go.

Anyone have any ideas what they've done to me?

tia,

Neal

always logs into xfce

Sounds to me like xfce may have changed /home/user/.xsession on you.

Try comparing the contents of /home/user/.xsession with the contents of /root/.xsession

xfce problem

OK, checked those files, I can't remember when I first noticed this problem but think it was today 4/5/03

/home/usr/.xsession was modified 4/2/3 and has some statements referring to fvwm which is one of my window manager options but never used.

/root/.xsession doesn't exist
there is
/root/.xsession-error file which modified 4/5/03

It has some warning messages and the first line says
iceauth: creating new authority file /root/.ICEauthority

/root/.ICEauthority was last modified 4/5/3 and is empty.

I'm running xfce on Mandrake 9.0 at work and here at home on Suse 7.3 and have noticed some quirks with it on both systems.

Any suggestions? or should I just log into Kde as root and uninstall xfce?

maybe look at .xinitrc

I find the state and contents of your two .xsession files completely baffling.

Perhaps you can take a look at your two .xinitrc files and learn why user has no choice other that xfce.

I have no opinion on whether you should ditch xfce. That depends on how willing you are to fool with it. Even if you uninstall xfce you probably will have to repair .xintrc and .xsession to make KDE runnable again.

Steve,
/home/usr/.xintrc had apparently been modified just to load xfce.

I copied /root/.xintrc over it and now I can get into Kde,Gnome etc.

Think I'll leave the funny .xsession files alone for not (if it ain't broke, don't fix it).

Thanks for your help,

Neal

ps: I killed the mice
