Post XFce on RH9

In the ongoing effort to speed up the system, Im looking at installing XFce.

Ive found the RPMs for it, but I want to ask before attempting (and possibly screwing up) an install.

Should I kill X (CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE) first and do the rpm -i from a pure console? Or can I do it from within Gnome?

Better to use apt to install something like this?

Once the install is done, should it be available from the Session menu on start?

If you've done a similar install, Id love to hear about it.

You can safely install the RPM's from inside Gnome. They should not start any software, just install it.

Whether or not XFCE will be in the session menu depends on whether or not the packages were built to do so (Usually packages built by the distro vendor will do this, others might not). Otherwise, you'll have to configure your display manager to offer XFCE sessions yourself.

I've installed XFCE 4 (I'm using it right now), but I built everything from source, so I can't help you on the RPMs, I'm afraid
