XFCE 4.03 Crashes On Slackware 9.1
 

I'm running a fresh install of Slackware 9.1. I uninstalled the original XFCE 3.99 package provided by Slackware, and installed the newest XFCE package I could find for Slackware. However, whenever it starts, it complains that the panel has crashed and asks to restart it. However, it continues in an endless loop. For now, I have to stick with GNOME(even good old KDE has betrayed me by suddenly crashing on startup without good reason; but let's focus on the real problem of XFCE here...).

try uninstalling 4.03 and removing all the config files, then reinstalling. i'm not sure that the 3.99 purged config files and that's creating the problems.

I had that same problem with xfce 3.99 on slack 9.1. This morning I decided to upgrade to slack current, which I got the latest xfce and kernel 2.4.24, plus many other upgrades, and xfce is working good know, using it right now.

try compiling from source, packages don't work that well.

Thanks, guys. I realised I didn't have libiconv installed, so I installed it per the instructions on the download page, but it still crashes. Looks like I'll have to compile from source. *crosses fingers*

Compiling from source is the way to go, I want to make a habit of doing things that way. But John, just to let you know I used swaret (swaret.org) to do my upgrading, works good it get's the dependencies and everything. Works just like urpmi, actually seems to work even better.

Yay, it works! Thanks, guys...just one wee problem - how do I configure XFCE's resolution? Apparently X is set to 1280x1024, but all my window managers are set to a larger resolution by default. :-/
