Xfce

Hello!!
I'm new. :newbie:
I'd like you to tell me what do You think about XFCE (I mean XFCE3 and XFCE4).
I love this wm and I think it's the best.. (maybe for women the best??), but my bf thinks, KDE is better..
And what do you think about XFCE??

Hi Enter_Slackgirl!

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.org. I think XFCE is great. I use it myself. I have no idea what peoples sees on KDE. For me, it's just a newbie desktop, good for the ones coming from Windows. It's shipped with a hole bunch of stuff and is extremely heavy. It does, looks better then Windows can look, but Macs also looks great in those cute little boxes, but that does not make it better...

Before XFCE I started out with Solaris 9.0 x86. That one comes with a very similar desktop manager called CDE (Common Desktop Environment). It's really ugly, but very, very functional and easy to use. Unfortunately, CDE wants to be "Linux Desktop", but it's not free and, for a desktop only, it's very expensive. Just as useless as Opera Browser. With so many good (and better) free alternatives around I see no point of purchasing one.

I then came out of google with XFCE. It's basically a CDE, but still have great looks and ever lighter and ever easier to use then CDE. I really like that one and I will stick with this desktop for quite a long time now... Blackbox is a big second favorite for me though :)

Regards!

Just a side note though: I've nothing against KDE or the ones who uses it :). I just think it's too heavy for my machines. (My fastest one is a 2GHZ and I still think KDE is slow on it)...

Well, I like Balckbox and Fluxbox too and maybe I'll try it a bit later...
In XFCE the best is, I think, You can have some programs fro KDE and GNOME and nothing more, I think it's 100% personalized.
And that's great.

I agree :). It's great the way you can access your applications too from the menu bar. I like it :).

Well, XFCE is my fav, maybe because it so... cut, so... sweet. Maybe I used nod good enough words, but I think it is, like I said.
I made my desktop as MacOS a bit (I used MacOS mode in KDE and it comes to XFCE too).
XFCE is WM for indywidualists, I think. Of course, KDE or GNOME You can config in your own way, but it still looks like KDE, Gnome the same, I think. And with XFCE it doesn't have to.
XFCE rullezzzz!! :)

Every program is available for every distribution. You just download and install it :). Using fedora core the easiest way would be through apt-get/synaptic though ;)

There are links to Fedora Core 1 source RPMs, i386 opt RPMs, i686 opt RPMs, and Fedora x86_64 RPMs, not to mention the source code.

Hi I see there are some people who know xfce and I need a little help:

I'm new to Linux and I'm experiencing some trouble installing xfec 4.0.3 on Mandrake9.2. The xfce people didn't have a build order posted for the rpms (I don't know if that's important) so i just installed them in this order :
libxfce4util libxfcegui4 libxfce4mcs xfce-mcs-manager xfce-mcs-plugins and everything went ok. Then I tried to install
xfce-panel and i got this error V3 DSA signature: BAD, key ID 8b9e12ab. I got this message as warning for other rpms before and i don't know what to do. Xfce-panel is the next rpm i have to install because of the dependencies. I tried redownloading it and it's still the same.

Please help me.
