XEmacs snafu

I just installed XEmacs from source. My system is a Linux from Scratch (www.linuxfromscratch.org) system, and I'm running kernel version 2.4.20. When I try to open a file, XEmacs doesn't bring up a dialog box, which is a royal pain. Instead, I just get a minibuffer at the bottom of the screen that asks me to type in the full path of the file I want to edit. I liked having a file dialog much better. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks.
