xdm kdm

hey guys, forgive the noobishness,

I'm currently playing with knoppix live cd. I'm wanting to remaster the cd to take off all the crap that i'll never use but also want to install kdeedu for kstars because im a loser. anyway, i open the console in kde and update apt-get and try apt-get install kdeedu. the package is found and downloaded etc but one of the dependencies requires me to stop 2 services, kdm and xdm. ive tried stopping them with kdm stop and xdm stop. xdm gives me an error kdm works i think. basically, is this due to me using a livecd distro? i tried at runlevel 2 but same thing.

kdm and xdm are both GUI login managers. You might be running one or the other but you usually would not be running both. Are you trying to stop something that doesn't exist?

I have no idea. the install through apt-get halts and tells me that those 2 services are running and need to be stopped before i can continue.

Are you doing this with KNOPPIX running as a lived CD? When I boot KNOPPIX 5.1.1 (as a live CD) neither xdm no kdm are running:

Code:
knoppix@Knoppix:~$ ps -ef | grep -i dm
knoppix 4073 4051 0 02:31 pts/1 00:00:00 grep --colour=auto -i dm
/etc/init.d/kdm exists but /etc/init.d/gdm does not. If I run
invoke-rc.d kdm start it claims to start kdm and repeating the above command then shows it running although I don't see anything different on the diskplay. Then running
invoke-rc.d kdm stop stops it. Of course, trying the same thing with xdm simply causes an error since /etc/init.d/xdm does not exist.
