xdg-mime file type

I'm trying to use xdg-mime to register a new mime type to be based off the file extension. I've tried creating an xml file and installing it with xdg-mime install and using mime-editor. In both cases, I make it an application media type with a "x-pbem" subtype and a glob pattern of "*.pbem." When I use "xdg-mime query filetype test.pbem", the result "application/x-gzip."

My best guess is that since the file matches both x-pbem and x-gzip, x-gzip is winning out either because of the content matching or bacause of some order of operations that I don't know about.

Any help in understanding how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.
