Unhappy xscreensaver woes

I have a laptop with a ATI Rage 128 Mobility chip. It is correctly identified in Red Hat 8 during setup. When i goto xscreensaver in gnome and choose a "3d" screensaver, xscreensaver locks up and i have to hard reboot. My glx extentions are enabled. Is there something I am doing wrong?

If it is any help, I have reinstalled RH8 quite a few times fresh. xscreensaver used to work.

I *think* (but not sure) Ati Rage you should not load Glx, but DRI 'til this card use a different component of xfree. Try to edit you xf86config.
It may not works (I'm really not sure, I never play with that) but I think you should try
