xawtv, vgrabbj and webcams

We have recently set up a webcam at work. We have script that takes still using vgrabbj and then uploads them to our webserver. This works fine but..............

Unless xawtv has been run and then closed, all the vgrabbj stills come out black. So each time the machine is rebooted, someone has to remember to run xawtv and close. Does anyone know what it is that xawtv is doing that frees up the webcam and how I can build that into our vgrabbj script?
