xauth: timeout in locking authority file //.Xauthority
I've spent over 2 days trying to figure out this problem. I know about permissions and believe I have them set properly (755). I can do a startx as root but not as a regular user. By now, I'm sure I've hosed my .Xauthority file. I also have received such nice messages as xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key My DISPLAY variable is set to localhost:0 I've also seen a message cat: //.Xauthority: Permission denied. The locking message shows itself 3 times before blanking the screen and then about 30 seconds later the last error messages appear. There is also an error **(gnome-session:4073): WARNING **: Unable to lock ICE authority file: /.ICEauthority.
I'm exhausted trying to figure this out. Is it simply possible to just reinstall X? Would that solve the problem. One other thing, I even tried running xdm, which brought up its nice pretty logon screen, let me logon, and then simply returned me to the logon screen.
Any ideas would certainly be appreciated. Thank you. Karl
Hi, what linux version and X windows are are using? That would help us understand the defaults. For the short answer, it is OK to delete the .Xauthority file in your user home directory. In fact you can delete the .ICE and .kde and .qt directory/files as long as you don't mind setting up the user defaults for these again. It sounds as if you have not been able to set them in the first place.
totally confused :
Xlib:no protocol specified.....please enlight
