Unhappy X won't start!

Hi,

in RH7.2 I had tried to install the nvidia drivers (rpm's) for my graphics card with no success, I uninstalled the rpm's, but X still seemed buggy, it seemed like the rpm's did leave something behind. Now after a upgrade to 7.3 X won't start at all. It did after the first reboot, but then.began the problems. Xconfigurator told me X had problems and wouldn't let me configure anything and than after the second reboot X wouldn't start:
"can't load ... from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a"
and it returned all the modules unresolved.
/var/log/messages told me that it couldn't locate char-major-81-1, but to my knowledge it should only load char-major-81 which is for my tv-card.
X did start after I edited XFree86-4 and deleted the lines for glx and GL open, but it recreates those lines with each boot.
Right now I have no idea how to fix this and I'm afraid retrying to install those nvidia drivers in this situation will only mess things up more.
Sorry for the long message, but I wanted to be as complete as possible
Hope someone can help.

Anne

Post the error messages from /var/log/XFree86.0.log. You also might want to try the nvidia drivers in .tar.gz format, the readme file from the nvidia website has excellent instructions for installing from the tarballs and the nv_check.sh script can be used to debug your install.

if you use the tarballs, you have to edit everything manually. i don't remember exactly what it is, but something to the extent of changing the video device from driver 'nv' to 'nvidia' and a few other modules...there should be a readme file on the driver download page
