x windows will not start in user group Slackware 12.0

slackware 12.0
kernel - 2.6.21.5smp

x windows will not start in user group ./home/david
just changed permissions on the usb thumb drive to allow changes to be made by other than root and group root
tried to log back in to /home/david and startx will not activate x window
created a new user ./home/david2
went back into the contents of the thumb drive and ......
can't change the contents of any of the files again ... looked at the permissions and they are set back to root and group root read/write only all other users read only ...
seems like i am stuck in a wicked circle here ... dare not change back to root and change the permissions again for the thumb drive ... it did not stay last time anyway ...
any ideas?????

I am surprised that slackers have not answered so forgive my unworthiness.

1) what do you mean by logging into user group ./home etc?

2) have you set your slack to be a multi boot thru /etc/inittab runlevel hopefully 5?

3) also have you got a working /etc/X11/xorg or xf86free config file

generally speaking....you create a new user with root powers with command
adduser

but you should not....(i suggest)...instead fix your boot into gui first....then we can use root powers to fix your file permissions or udev rules or /etc/fstab file for usb devices

thanks

thanks for the reply .,,,,
found the directories mentioned above, how to edit them i dare not yet, i have some interest in editing the /etc/fstab with usb root priveleges, but the inittab and xf86free config files are outreageous!!!!
i am not a programmer, just a lowly command line hack that reads about linux when i can .... df ls ... lpadmin and others
great system .... i can't ever imagine ms ever opening up their core stuff like this ...
it is heartening ,,, but i have a lifetime to learn .... i'm not going anywhere and kde makes the experience much easier most of the time ... and hp has done a great job helping out ...

see if http://www.slackbook.org/ sparks your interest.

btw....I use partimage...running off a live cd.....you save your partition and if learning ...you make changes ....if you make a mistake you just restore the saved image.

of course it helps to burn the image to a dvdrw

hope that helps.
