Exclamation X windows hangs for no reason?

Hello

So obviously I've done something wrong, I just don't know what it is.

This is what I have done:
1) Fresh install RH9 20-8 kernel
2) Installed ALSA-0.9.6 drivers
3) Installed NVIDIA drivers

Rebooted, system works!

Rebooted again (weird problem running programs, clikc on something that worked 5 min ago, now doesn't work)

System boots to X, but hangs leaving spinning hourglass cursor (which I can move around) and I can login to non runlevel 5 stuff...

Here are my FSTAB, XF86Config and mudule.conf readouts:

FSTAB:

LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0

Get rid of DRI... I don't believe its necessary and actually might screw things up if I remember correctly. For more info on that, consult the FAQ thast nVidia puts out, either under *.pdf or text file version.

Also read the section on configuring AGPgart. You may need to use AGPgart rather than native AGP support in the drivers.

Also, make sure that you un-installed the prior RPM that was the nvidia driver.

How did you go about installing your nvidia drivers, which file did you use, and can you maybe point us towards the page?

If you did indeed install the driver via RPM, then yes, rpm -qa | grep nvidia should provide something.

Check the error log:
/var/log/XFree86.0.log

To find any errors that may lead us to an idea of what's going on. Errors should be denoted with:
(EE)

Commenting out the DRI bit should be sufficient to stop it from loading at the end of the file.

HTH

Cool

With or without the DRI thing at the end does nothing...

I d/led the www.nvidia.com linux install thing NVIDIA*.run where you have to not use x at all and be su then do a sh NVIDIA*.run thing...

everything said it worked fine...

I'm in w2k right now, i'll post that XFree86.0.log in a bit

Thanks again guys!

OK- this is even better, as far as I can see, there ARE NO ERRORS in the log:

ha ha ha,

Thanks for the post up

Anyway, I'm being led to believe this is NOT a problem with X, your Video driver, or anything that controls them, but rather of your Desktop Environment and/or window manager.

Do you "startx" or choose to login from a gui?

Cool

For troubleshooting, let's go via a startx, if that's ok. You'll need to edit your runlevel, and when we have this all sussed out, you can undo these changes and have it go back to booting to a gui

Open up the file /etc/inittab

Edit a line that looks like this:
id:5:initdefault:

And change the 5 to a 3, save and exit. Now upon reboot, it should go directly into a terminal. After you login, type:
startx
To get into your gui.

See if ANY error messages appear from that.

ALTERNATIVELY...

Try choosing a different window manager to use to see if the problem still exists with that.

Cool

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH K.

So, I did all that fun runlevel stuff and here's what I got:

Gnome-Session: error while loading shared libraries: libart_lgp2-2.so.2

(i'm pretty sure that's the right filename, i can't even read MY messy writing!)

So what's the next stage of attack?

Jim

From your install CD OR:
ftp://limestone.uoregon.edu/redhat/9....11-2.i386.rpm
ftp://limestone.uoregon.edu/redhat/9....11-2.i386.rpm

install those 2 files

Cool

Ok well, problem # 2 has reared its ugly binary head:

2.3.11-2 devel already installed
2.3.15-1 (newer than 2.3.11-2) already installed

We have the best luck.

In a console, type:
whereis Gnome-Session (if it's truly capitalized as you have shown above, otherwise use the case that is shown from the actual error)

And then:
ldd /path/to/Gnome-Session

For example:
ldd /usr/bin/gnome-session

Would be the case and location for Slackware 8.1

This should list all the dependencies AND show you their locations. This way you can actually see if it's pointing to the correct location for the above mentioned file. From there, if that file actually exists, try running:
ldconfig

If this still does not work, look at /etc/ld.so.conf and make sure that the directory containing the above mentioned lib exists. So let's say it was /usr/lib/libart_lgp2-2.so.2

You want to make sure that the config file /etc/ld.so.conf has:
/usr/lib
As one of the path's listed in that file. If it doesn't add it to the bottom, save exit, and re-run:
ldconfig

HTH

Cool
