X Windows Freezes when switching back from virtual terminal

Hello.

I am working with an X-Windows system on a Dell Optiplex GX260, running Debian Stable. It has an ATI Radeon VE in it. It boots into X fine, and KDE 3.1 (backported version to run with stable) works fine. If I switch to a virtual console terminal, and then back again, however, X freezes. I think it has something to do with the kernel that I just compiled, because if I use my old kernel, it works fine - no freezing. Anyone know the options I might have left out? I can post the .config file if you want it.

TIA.
