X-windows doesn't crash or hang, it just stops loading at the black X?

Installed Slackware 12.2 on one box, X runs just fine. Did the same thing on a diskless NFS-root Via Epia Eden-CPU system (running Slack's huge.s i486 kernel on both machines), but all I get is a black X mouse cursor (that I CAN move around) on a black background. Using the 'via' video driver with CRT (TV-NTSC) output, all of which was automatically detected by "X -configure". No errors in the Xorg.log file, it just stops at

(||) Module "ramdac" already built in

and never goes any further. Does the same thing if I disable DRI.

What's X hanging on, and how do I fix it? Might it have something to do with NFS-root? I did get a kernel complaint about locking during bootup, so I loaded the rpc.statd etc NFS daemons, but I don't know if that's correct.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

did you install/enable a window manager?

$ echo "icewm-session" >> .xinitrc
$ startx -- -dpi 100

(or startkde or gnome-session or .... or ... . . . . . . )

Sounds like you got to the screen to test that your X configuration works. But that's about all it does. Cntrl + Alt + Backspace to get back to the console.
