X shutdown problem
Console only works great. Running X works great (except xmms... which is really really borked). Getting out of X sucks.
It closes programs... good. It kills KDE.... good. It garbles the screen and crashes.... bad! Why does it do this? Hardware: Pentium-M 1.7ghz 1024MB PC2700 FireGL T2 128MB 7K60 7200RPM HDD What's working? Modem with ALSA and slmodemd Bluetooth via kernel and BlueZ 802.11a/b/g with madwifi 802.11b with kernel orinoco patch Radeon card via fglrx (~2100fps glxgears) Audio via ALSA Pro/1000 via e1000 GPS via PL-2303 dongle This is an IBM 2373GEU (T41p) running Slackware 9.1. Software I installed: ethereal nmap nessus kismet wellenreiter libpcap btscanner airsnort cheops driftnet alsa bluez slmodem some other stuff I can't remember... Anyway, it all works except shutting down X. |
I'm really not sure what you're talking about.
|
I start up X and almost everything seems to work flawlessly.
I want to shutdown the computer, or just kill X, and the screen turns to garbage, and the computer crashes. I really can't elaborate any more... that's all there is to it. |
My wild guess is that the fglrx and the
framebuffer device don't want to play together ... I don't have any experience with the ATI binary drivers, but what are you using for the framebuffer? Kernel ATI fb modules, VESA, ... ? Cheers, Tink... |
VESA.... how do I change to the ati ones?
|
Kernel recompile!

Well, with the kernel recompile.... I already had the radeon drivers available, but I also had the VESA ones compiled it. I assumed that it was using the VESA ones. Is there a good way to check, or to force the selection?
|
You could try something like
append="video=radeon" in your lilo.conf Have a google for additional options ;) Cheers, Tink |
I ended up having all sorts of other weird issues... so I nuked the machine. All is well now. :p
