Question X server won't load in RH 9.0

Hi,

When I booted my Redhat 9.0, there was no failed
indication during the boot process but when it tried
to load the X Window server immediately thereafter, it
couldn't get through the GUI login prompt but returned
an error that X server couldn't be started. The
system prompted to load a fresh configuration but it
was still unsuccessful. Then it prompted to disable
the X server and I was able to gain access through the
console. When I type in startx or X, there was an
error and the ff. log found in /var/log/XFree86.0.log
were:

XFree86 ANSI C Emulation: 0.2
XFree86 Video Driver: 0.6
XFree86 XInput driver: 0.4
XFree86 Server Extension: 0.2
XFree86 Font Renderer: 0.4

(II) Loader running on Linux
(II) Load Module: 'bitmap"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module bitmap
(II) UnloadModule: "bitmap"
(EE) Failed to load module "bitmap" (module does not
exist, 0)
(II) LoadModule: "pcidata"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module pcidata
(II) UnloadModule: "pcidata"
(II) Failed to load module "pcidata" (module does not
exist, 0)

Fatal server error:
Unable to load required base modules, Exiting...

The XFree86 version is 4.3.0 (Red Hat Linux release:
4.3.0-2)

I already tried configuring the X server using the ff.
cmds.:
-XF86Setup (couldn't be found)
-XFree86 -configure (returns an error same as above)
-Xconfigurator (couldn't be found)
-xf86cfg (couldn't be found)
-xf86config (couldn't be found)
-xconf (couldn't be found)

I have also searched available solutions through
google but I couldn't find any viable solutions.
If you happen to know the workaround for this problem
without doing a re-install, pls. let me know. I am
still a Linux newbie but I found it interesting and
would explore it further to build know-how.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Migs

try to find the config program with :

$whereis xf86config

#you should see something like:

xf86config: /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config /usr/bin/X11/xf86config

cd to that dir and then issue the command. I don't think those programs are in your default path.

Good Luck!

I have never used RH's native config option. I assume they edit the same file?? Right? I have always used the xf86config program and just kind of got used to it I guess.

Just one more thing!!! Are you sure that the X Server has been properly installed with all the necessary packages and libraries.

Run this command and post the output here:

rpm -qa | grep x-free
