Question X Server won't start

Hey all,

well I was a bit of a stupid git... the server was working fine (SuSE 9.0), and I then decided to upgrade to SuSE 9.1 - how difficult could it have been?

Well, after endless head scratching, I still am none the wiser as to why the server won't start up X. Not that that's a big deal for a server, but I need the GUI in order to set up stuff via YAST etc etc...

Basically, I installed 9.1 while the server was still running on 9.0 (literally at the same time), 'cos I didn't want the server to go down. Ironically, had I not been so reluctant to switch it off in the first place, I doubt I would have run into this problem. Anyway...

I've so far tried
Code:
# kde
- nothing.
Code:
# kdm
- literally, nothing.
Code:
# startx
# error while loading shared libaries: libregmgr.so.0.1 :
cannot open shared object file : no such file or directory.
Code:
# startkde
# Unable to open display ""
  <cut>
ksplash : cannot connect to X server
I also tried switching to init 3 and then back to init 5 , but it did nothing, as well as trying xinit (though to be honest, I really don't know what that does anyway).

So, I'm stuck to say the least. I can't think of any reasons why this should have happened (apart from the fact that I possibly ignored conflicts in YAST and installed it while the server was still running 9.0)... any ideas...???

well you clearly have a missing library, and google suggests it's not "libregmgr", but "libresmgr", which to be sounds like a resolution manager... go install.

snap, I just found it on google too now...

well, the problem is (and this is the biggie)...

...there's no internet connection to the server. Yeah, I know, the server's useless without the internet, but SuSE 9.1 put some stupid firewall thing on it which I just don't need - I've already got a hardware firewall.

As well as this, I'm running off command at the moment, not that that's a huge problem, but
a) I don't have gcc (SuSE generally doesn't seem to have gcc) to compile the tar
b) I have no way of loading the file from the internet due to the lack of a connection.

Basically, all I really need to know is how to switch the darn firewall off. This is what's stopping the connection, I think. w3m on the local machine simply tells me that the website (be it Google or anything) is unaccessible.... (presumably) due to the firewall.

I've already got webmin installed, but I cannot use it due to the fact that the firewall is blocking its use. I would quite happily use webmin till the cows come home, but can't.

I already tried to shut down the firewall without any success. These were the two commands I executed.

Code:
# rm /etc/susconfig/SuSEfirewall2
and

Code:
# rcSuSEfirewall2
(though to be honest I don't actually know what that does.)

So, all in all, what I'm asking, is how to switch off the firewall that has restricted the access to the network/internet via command. (No GUI, remember)

Cheers.

how about
#/etc/susconfig/SuSEfirewall2 stop

does that stop the fire wall? or does SuSEfirewall2 --help show you anything? or man page?

I know I probably should have done that, but that brings about another probem - I deleted the /etc/suseconfig/SuSEfirewall2 folder... I was hoping that that would get rid of the firewall... seems I've basically just completely crapped up my system...

Do any of the firewall binaries or files hang around anywhere else by any chance?

Regards,
Ronald.

Shit.... I've just found out what I did was completely stupid of me.

Basically, what I did was to install SuSE 9.1 via KDE, and not another window manager. That's why I've been having all this bother with the GUI.

I should have read this post before upgrading... http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...38#post1184938

My question to the experts here has now changed slightly... How should I recover a system which is stuffed as a result of installing a new version of KDE over a running, existing one?
