X-server segmentation fault on program launching
Hello:
Having upgraded Debian Linux i386 squeeze release from kernel 2.6.30 to 2.6.32 everything works except X-server segmentation fault on launching a graphic program (CHIMERA, http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/chimera/[/url], nightly build). I have successfully recompiled CHIMERA on the updated Linux, to no avail. Below - between *** - the final part of "Xorg.0.log" reporting troubles. Before that, the log is identical to when X-server is working properly (reported in full between ####). Thanks for suggestions. chiendarret ********* Backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/X (xorg_backtrace+0x3b) [0x80ada5b] 1: /usr/bin/X (0x8048000+0x5aa75) [0x80a2a75] 2: (vdso) (__kernel_rt_sigreturn+0x0) [0xb78b240c] Segmentation fault at address (nil) Fatal server error: Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Your video drivers are not installed properly:

You are right, thank you. Reinstalled the driver. It works for both CHIMERA and glxgears. However, I still do not understand how the problems arose. After upgrading to kernel 2.6.32, a few days ago, I had to export CC for gcc=4.3 in order to be able to install the nvidia driver with the nvidia installer. Although I did not check CHIMERA, "glxgears" answered for a 3D acceleration, and I could run Youtube correctly. After I posted the above problems, I checked "glxgears", getting segmentation fault like for CHIMERA. I wonder whether the origin of this instability (should it continue) is the compilation of nvidia on exported CC gcc=4.3, while now with 2.6.32 gcc=4.4. Or rather that residues from previous installation "Debian way" of the nvidia driver are intereferring. Bot before and now I used the legacy driver suggested by the nvidia installer for the old GeForce2 MX 200 of this desktop. chiendarret |
First, glxgears can not confirm for you that 3D acceleration is working.
Second, your kernel and nvidia kernel module must be compiled with the same version of gcc. Finally, I really don't know how the problem arose either :-) Adam |
