X refuses to work ... [start GUI?]

[Running Slackware 10.0 on a Compaq Presario 5400US (~2.4 GB partition).]

When I type "startx," it gives the usual blurb of text, then, as X is starting, switches to some "weird-ass" vertical bars. I don't know if this is a hardware problem (I used Knoppix v3.4 and the X system worked fine).

I grabbed the hardware specs from the Compaw website.

Graphics

Integrated Direct AGP 3D Graphics with 8 MB Dynamically allocated as video memory

• 64-bit hardware-accelerated 3D graphics

I tried to use Google and the Search function here, but neither have returned anything useful. Maybe I'm looking for grapes when I should be chasing apples ( ... yeah, that didn't make much sense to me either), but could anyone offer any advice?

>>I am guessing that this is a software problem, but I am not sure. I can't seem to find any pages that suggest that I might need a driver .. <<

[Just to make sure it wasn't a one-time thing, I uninstalled, then re-installed all the X, XAP, KDE, etc. packages ... still doesn't work]

Did you run "xorgconfig"?

Keep in mind Slackware doesn't auto configure X. Run "xorgconfig" from the command line as root and follow the prompts.
Make sure you have your monitor refresh rates.

Sorry for the long delay, but it took awhile to get everything working correctly (it makes no sense why the default refresh would be set to 30-0 ... especially when one inputs "60" ... ).

Well, it is working now, and thank you for your help.
