I want to start an X session to a remote machine... I try:

X -query <host>

But, I ahve an X session already running on screen 0.

On the system you want to start the display on:
X :1

Or for display 2:
X :2

and so on...

Incredible, I was about to ask exactly the same question!

In addition, how do I switch back and forth between my local X session and the remote session? Any way to run the remote one inside a window that I can resize?

Thanks!

ctrl + alt + F7 brings up screen 0, ctrl + alt + F8 brings up screen 1, etc.

If you only want to run a remote application you can do it to your current display. if you want a completely different window manager then try a VNC connection - then it should stay in a window.
