X problems on NEC Versa SX laptop
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me with my outdated system and X problems. System details: Nec Versa SX 64M RAM TFT monitor Trident 9388 graphics Card Linux is running: Slackware 7.1 16M swap For numerous reasons, this is what I am stuck with. I'd love to update--it'd probably solve all my problems--but I'm out of luck. The gist of it is I can not get the X server to start up. When I run xf86config, get the config file and then run X -probeonly, I get the following. Through the xf86config program, I choose 'Trident Cyber 9388' as it is the closest one. I'm never questioned about the Framebuffer so I don't know where that's coming from. I've also gone through all the help/man files and relevent README's. :P Also, there is no "fbdev" section in the "Screen" section of my xf86config. ================================================= XFree86 Version 3.3.6 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300) Release Date: January 8 1999 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. Operating System: Linux 2.2.13 i686 [ELF] Configured drivers: FBDev: Server for frame buffer device (Patchlevel 10): mfb, cfb8, cfb16, cfb24, cfb32 (using VT number 7) XF86Config: /etc/XF86Config (**) stands for supplied, (--) stands for probed/default values (**) XKB: keymap: "xfree86(us)" (overrides other XKB settings) (**) Mouse: type: Busmouse, device: /dev/mouse, buttons: 3 (**) Mouse: 3 button emulation (timeout: 50ms) (**) FontPath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/" You must provide a "Screen" section in XF86Config for at least one of the following graphics drivers: fbdev Fatal server error: No configured graphics devices ====================================================== Now, when I run XF86Setup and make the same choices for the xf86config file it automatically tries to start up the Xserver and I get a bright white-blue blank screen. Then when I have to do a server kill just to get a console back, I get flashed a quick msg: "Xserver running on a different virtual window" Any ideas to fix this? Or even what the problem really is? My HD is a 2G Win 2G linux partition and the windoze side barely functions. I am pretty much up a creek at this point. (I'm working off of a loner right now) Thanks |
