x problems

I'm runnin Red Hat 7.3 on a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop with an ati rage mobility video card. It is usually my standard practice to run in run level 3 and when needed manually bring up gnome from the command line with the start x command; however last evening when going to start x I got the following error:

"XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known prossessed) with 0 events remaining.

Has anyone seen this before? Or perhaps know whats causing it? And how I might fix it?
