X log in/out problems


hi,
i have mdk 8.1 . i use lilo as my boot manager. i don't want my system to start x automatically i.e. i want to enter shell first and then enter x. also my system auto logs in to gnome nad when i log out x freezes. i want to prevent this. kndly tell me what to do thru shell and remember that i am a total newbie.

Edit /etc/inittab. Find
id:5:initdefault
Change 5 to 3. Reboot. You'll have console.

thanx

hi,
that worked but how do u stop it from logging in automatically i.e. it does not show me the log in console in X and i can't choose KDE as my window manager as the default is GNOME. is there anyway i can change it from the console itself.

You can try to login to X through a session manager such as KDM (the session manager of KDE).
I don't know if KDM (or KDE for that matter) is correctly setup on your system, but if it is, you can start the KDM session manager just by executing 'kdm' as root user.

If you have the "startkde" script (in /usr/bin, I think) you should be able to just type that at the prompt when you want KDE instead of Gnome.
