X (gnome) crashs after installing webmin

hi,
i'm using suse8.1 and installed the system from some cd's.
webmin was not available, so i thougth i can install it from an suse ftp server. but i found no version for 8.1. i just installed it and after some problems webmin was runnig fine. (all this i did with ssh or putty from an remote pc)
next login to the x server with gnome showed me a white backround with the mouse. in a console i looked for some processes with 'top' and there was one 'gnome_segv2' starting again and again and again (about 200times)
when i reset the x with ctrl+alt+backspace the running processes are gone.
the rest of the system (all the servers and webmin) runs fine.
any ideas?

can i reinstall the whole system but without changing my server-config?
can i update to suse9.2 without changing my server-config?

thanks
mht

online_update don't work

hello and thank you,
but it won't work!
i tried several things:

yast online_update .url ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/x.y/rpm/i586/
(error msg like this: could not initialise http/ftp connection)
(i used 8.2, 9.2 and 'current' for the x.y)

when i try things like this
yast online_update .url ftp://ftp.suse.com/
it says wrong url!

online_update -u ftp://ftp.suse.com/
brings
product: suse linux
version: 8.1
arch: i386
lang: de
URL: ftp://ftp.suse.com/
PATH: ./i386/update/8.1/patches
Error retriving patches: ERROR(Mediaperation is not supported by media)

is ist because there are no updates for suse8.1 anymore?

another problem in yast:
when i want to set up a new installation source, yast locks. the only way to get out is CTRL+C!

is it possible that i crashed my system by trying/installing some wrong version of webmin?
