X, failing to start properly, nvidia drivers

new to the forum, but i hope to become regular.

when i startx, the screen will pause, flicker for about 30 seconds and then finally launch at the resolution i want (1280x1024). I have no idea why its stopping to test (and fail) at these resolutions. I am certain of my frefresh rate numbers as well as my supported resolutions (1280, which it finally loads to). anyone wanna point me in the direction of some relevant information (ive exhausted the X howtos).

heres the relevant section from my XFree86.log:

im confused on what to try next.

btw, gentoo linux 1.1a (2.4.18 custom kernel w/ XFS and framebuffer), nvidia 1.0-2880 with a Diamond V550 TNT 1 (oldie but a goodie), and XFree 4.2.

I'd try to change horizsync, vertsync and clocks to be closer to the values it's using after tests. But be carefule and first make a backup copy.
