X display manager not starting


i have been using knoppix std for a while and today i formatted and reinstalled it. after install, it says "Not starting X display manager. It is not the defualt display manager" so it allows me to log on using no gui...so i type

/etc/init.d/xdm start

and i get the same message.. anyone know how to make X the defualt display manager, or any other suggestions...i'm a little in the dark on this one...thanx

also i see it says /var/run/xdm.pid not found....

It should be trying to start kdm

Does the file /etc/X11/default-display-manager exist ? if so make sure this is set to kdm.

Try runnng kdm as root from the console.

I'm not sure why you have no xdm though.

well, actually fluxbox is the defualt window manager, but thats not even the problem... X won't even start....all i get to do is log in and i just have a console, thats it.

well i took the poor mans way out...i formatted and reinstalled...voula, problem solved.... thanx for your help guys
