X configuration problem
 

First off, I'm running RedHat 7.1 on a 486 with 20mb ram. I've got a Diamond Speedstar 64 and an old Samsung monitor. Running Xconfigurator, I select the Speedstar 64 as the card and generic vga 640x480 for the monitor (the specific monitor model is not listed, and I'm just trying to get X to work). I choose 640x480x8 and x16 as the resolution, then 1mb ram (which is what it has) then "no clockchip setting." It then tries to start X, going black for a few seconds then saying there's a problem with my X configuration. I've tried every kind of combination of generic card/monitors and nothing seems to work. Anyone have any ideas? Is 20mb even enough to run X with? Help is appreciated.

Try running xf86config then XF86Setup. Remember it's case sensitive

Try using 640 x 480 at 8-bit only (not 16-bit). Also, try selecting your resolutions/card/VRAM, but skip the X configuration test; just let Xconfigurator write its XF86Config file and exit. Then type startx from the command line. I've had a couple of occasions where Xconfgiurator wouldn't pass the vid/X setup test even when I had the right values for everything, but by skipping the test, I was able to fool it.

xf86config and XF86Setup didn't help. I tried configuring it without testing then starting, but I get errors. "(EE): No devices detected" and "Fatal server error: no screens found." Same results on any combination of standard vga card/monitor setups. Just wish I could get this thing going.
