X-Chat DCC get error

Total n00b here, so please be patient.
When i use x-chat (IRC client) on DCC gets I get an error as follows:
DCC get failed cannot write to file /home/ORiON/downloads/whatever.rar
I checked the permissions for the folder and have write access, It was working before but that may have been when i was logged in as root, then again i don't know if that even matters. I dunno, anyone? This is driving me insane because I know it's some mundane detail I over-looked.
